The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest

I had the good fortune of going to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in Denver a few weeks ago. For those who don’t know, this is the biggest High-End show in our business. This is where the guys that make the most out of this worlds’ products get to showcase them for the industry…and it is open to the public.

First, if you ever have the chance to attend the show; do it. No matter what your level of interest, there are things here that will expand your understanding of the High-End and expand your appreciation of what is possible in reproducing music. So now on to a few of the very cool things I saw.

Computer Audio is here in a big way. Demo after demo was being done with very high-resolution digital files. 24/96 files used to be cool but now 24/192 is the new cool. Until you have heard a file this good you have not heard music. We will be demonstrating this quality very soon in our showroom.

Turntables were everywhere. I saw turntables that cost as much as a nice house and I saw some that were very reasonable. The one thing they all had in common was great sound. If you have not considered vinyl in a while, now is the time to. We carry great tables from $329.95 and up; and if you still have a bunch of records at home, like most of us do, it is time to put them to use. By the way, there are plenty of new vinyl available too.

Tubes are the new cool, again. Yep, tubes. We have been on this bandwagon for several years now and keep some great McIntosh tube amps and pre-amps on display all the time. I have to say that probably 60-75% of the speaker manufacturers were using tube amps to show their stuff.

Speakers were a lot of fun! There are so many great ones out there to choose from. The biggest surprise to me may have been from Sony! They were showing the SSA-R1 a $27,000.00 pair of speakers and guess what, they were great! I do not mean kind of great, sort of great or great considering that Sony made them. They were just flat out, great sounding speakers. The cabinet construction was incredible and the sound they made caused me to sit and listen for a long time, when I had very little time available. It is fantastic to see a generally mainstream company like Sony pull off a product this cool.

I will do more on this great show as I have time; I just wanted to get some thoughts out while they were fresh in my mind.
